Summer 2017 Ministry Letter from Jere Vincent

He said therefore, “What is the kingdom of God like? And to what should I compare it? It is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in the garden….” (Luke 13:18-19) The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!” The Lord replied, “If you had faith the size of a mustard seed…” (Luke 17:5-6)

In comparing the Kingdom of God to a tiny mustard seed, Jesus was using a powerful illustration. While the mustard seed is not the smallest seed known to man, it was the smallest seed planted in the gardens of Jesus’ day. At Family Builders Ministries, we are about to embark on a new initiative to help couples that are in crisis in their marriage. A small seed that can grow into something that will impact couples experiencing distress in their marriage.  This is an email I received from a couple, one that we receive too often:

Jere…

Richard and I are having tough times. Really tough ones…

We are in a near divorce situation so anything you can do or recommend, perhaps something will affect Richard enough to want to try. I think he is very depressed and overwhelmed… I still want this marriage very much. and know that only God can get us through this but we both have to want to work thru our problems with God right there with us. – Darlene

God’s intent for marriage has been adversely affected by human brokenness and cultural forces. The need is great in helping mitigate its effects on our relationships. Numerous pastors continue to express to me their concerns for these marriages within the church.  You probably are personally aware of couples who have these same needs and the dire consequences of this condition.  But the Lord is showing Family Builders a new avenue in reaching the brokenhearted.  He is opening doors in ways we never imagined. We are excited to have discovered, with the Lord’s leading, a new gospel-centered program called Created for Connection. The goal of these weekend seminars is to address helping couples repair, enhance, and continually grow their connection in their love relationship, bringing back hope.  A few of the main areas addressed:

  • Learn what drives distress and distance
  • Understand the logic of emotions
  • Identify, recognize, and stop that negative repetitive pattern
  • Create safety so you can complete conversations
  • Recover, repair and forgive emotional injuries
  • Enhance their sexual intimacy

This program has been used successfully by the United States military chaplains in preventing divorce in couples that are returning from overseas deployment. After attending the program, 67% of couples who were previously seeking divorce, significantly improved their relationships and still were married five years later. A majority of the couples had healed their injuries and rebuilt their trust.

“Romantic love is all about attachment and emotional bonding. It is all about our wired-in need to have someone to depend on, a loved one who can offer reliable emotional connection and comfort. Love is not the icing on the cake of life. It is a basic primary need, like oxygen or water. Once we understand and accept this, we can more easily get to the heart of relationship problems.”

– Sue Johnson – Co-author of Created For Connection

Family Builders Ministries is also very excited to share with you another new partnership with Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. Working together, we will join forces to salvage marriages in crisis.  This ministry partnership will leverage the strengths of both organizations to enhance marriages for couples in churches throughout New England. Gordon-Conwell will provide Family Builders Ministries with seminary graduate students and leadership training to assist couples in developing a deeper level of connection in their marriage. This new partnership is beginning at a key moment for Family Builders Ministries as we expand our outreach to couples in crisis. Our first initiative together will be in October 2017 as we launch our Created for Connection weekends.  Because of the intense nature of the weekend, 3 trained pastors/counselors and 3 seminary graduate students will be on site for the 12 couples attending. How impactful to have this level of attentiveness!

A small seed has been planted.  Will you help us in nurturing it into something that will grow into many more opportunities for those who are hurting and without hope?

We can’t obviously do this without the hands of many.   Are you willing to “get your hands dirty” and labor in the fields with us? Please consider supporting us with your prayers and/or donations to offset the cost for couples such as Richard and Darlene to attend the event. By sponsoring a couple, you will make a difference that can alter another marriage from going down the path of divorce!

We thank you in advance for your support! Your donation is greatly appreciated and will be used to make a difference to prevent another couple from divorce.

You can either donate online at our secure donation page, call us at 603-442-5800, or send a check to: PO Box 321, Somersworth, NH 03878.

If you would like to sit down and have a discussion about donating time, money, or services to Family Builders, you can contact me directly by phone or by email at jere@familybuilders.net. My wife, Brenda, and I would love to meet with you for lunch or coffee.

Thank you for your prayerful consideration of our request.
